Trauma, Abuse, & Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Traumatic experience may stem from a single event, such as sexual or physical violence, or may be the result of emotional wounding over time. Whether recent or long past, these experiences are too overwhelming for the brain to process in the usual way. Traumatic memories tend to form “pockets” of unprocessed feeling, behavior, and physical sensation which limit energy for living fully in the present. The first goal of trauma therapy is to minimize distress that can disrupt daily living. Coping skills, body-focused techniques, and meditation are effective and increase calm. Ultimately, trauma therapy is about reclaiming the life you were always meant to lead.
